The Buffalo Rifle Shoot is an event in which the contestants compete with firearms typical of those used by the early westerners in the buffalo hunts of long ago. The rifles are pistol caliber lever action, big bore lever action, and big bore single shot. The pistol calibers and the lever actions are the same as used in the Cowboy Action shooting, while the big bore calibers are those used in these rifles prior to 1890.

In all cases we are limited to lead bullets. We shoot steel targets of various shapes, some are animal shapes but most are round. Typically the targets are 10" the smallest to 24 " the largest and are set at distances from 200 to 300 yards. The pistol cartridges and lever action rifles cartridges are used for our running buffalo at 100 yards. The running buffalo is a motorized target that runs the length of the course in 20 seconds. Shooting the pistol cartridge first, 10 shots are fired at the buffalo, then with the lever rifle cartridge, 5 shots going across and 5 shots back. Finally, the big bore single shot targets are set at 200, 225, 250, 275 and 300 yards.
